Self-Honking Horns to Prevent Pedestrian Injuries

The most vulnerable road users of all, pedestrians are at great risk of injury and death, should a vehicle-pedestrian collision occur.  That’s why Volvo, always a prolific purveyor of safety technologies, has created a system that detects nearby pedestrians.  What’s new about this is that once a pedestrian is detected, the vehicle will automatically sound the horn, to warn the pedestrian and vehicle occupants.  Honk!

Called the “Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection System”, Volvo will debut the system initially on buses.  As the name implies, the program can also detect nearby cyclists, and sound the horn appropriately.  This camera-based system has significant potential, especially in urban areas where there traditionally is an abundant mixture of cyclists, pedestrians, and buses.
