Recently, Volkswagen demonstrated a new system that allows drivers to control certain functions in their vehicles just by using hand gestures. VW’s new Golf, which will debut in 2016, will feature this technology.
Both driver and passenger will be able to use hand gestures to adjust vehicle functions including:
- Opening and closing the sunroof
- Changing the air conditioning settings
- Increase or decrease volume of the stereo
Adopted from systems developed for use in video gaming, gesture controls have the potential to reduce drivers’ hands-off-the-wheel time, and thus enhance safety.
Although BMW also plans to feature gesture control in its models, Volkswagen will be the first to allow drivers to gain this convenience.
